More About Rhodes

Rhodes (ro-dos in Greek) is the jewel in the Dodecanese crown. It’s big, brash and bold and receives by far the lion’s share of visitors to this island group. It’s open year-round and enjoys an exceptionally mild climate. It combines all that is needed in a holiday island: beaches, nightlife, culture, scenery, greenery and comfort.

Like Crete, its larger neighbour to the southwest, it could almost exist independently of the Greek mainland.

Rhodes is the biggest island of the archipelago called Dodecanese and is the capital of the group of Greek Islands. It is world known for its colossus. It is located between Karpathos and Kos. The capital lies within the walls of a very well preserved Venetian castle, built by the Knights of Saint John. Its interesting sites and the wonderful beaches make this Greek island one of the most popular islands of Greece.

Rhodes island is considered safe to stay and the water and food here is also of good quality. Some things to buy from Rhodes are sponges, ceramic watches, olive oil, bottle of wine, religious icons etc. Jewellery stores are very common here and colourful sea shells are a popular souvenir item.

Rhodes, Greece

Rhodes is shaped like a spearhead and it has a coastline of approximately 220kms with very rich resources of flora and fauna. The island has mountainous regions in its interiors and is covered with forests of pines and cypress. The shores are very rocky but some crops like wine grapes, olives, citrus fruit, vegetables etc. are grown in certain land strips on the island.

Rhodes also has a very rich historical background and the predominant religion here is the greek orthodox. There is a noteworthy Roman Catholic minority on the island, many of whom are progenies of Italians who endured after the end of the Italian livelihood. Rhodes has a Muslim minority, a remnant from Ottoman Turkish periods. The Jewish community of Rhodes dates back to the 1st century AD.

Along with the popularity of being a famous tourist destination it is also one of the favourite spots for scuba divers. The underwater world of Rhodes is considered a paradise with numerous varieties of marine habitat. The marine life is in plenty here and the ships wrecks on the sea bed prove a haven for the divers which help them see the history with their own eyes. These ship wrecks also house some varied species of fishes and marine life.

Rhodes Settlements / Holiday Resorts
  • Afandou - One of the big villages on the island. The golf course of Rhodes is situated in this area along with a long beach
  • Archangelos or (Arhangelos) - The second largest town on the island
  • Asklipio - inland village, site of an old church and a castle
  • Faliraki - Rhodes' action resort. Go there to party, everything else is better somewhere else. The hotels north from Faliraki are much quieter. Hotels near the water park do not interest clubbers, and are really family friendly. Nice beaches, a lot less winds than on the west coast and really good public transport.
  • Gennadi Around 64 km from Rhodes Old Town and nearby to Prasonisi, attracts several keen surfers. Among the last unspoiled stretches of coastline left on Rhodes.
  • Haraki (Charaki) - Small former fishing village located next to Lindos. A chain of restaurants surrounds an enclosed beach.
  • Ialysos - Blue waters, a seemingly endless organized beach, big hotel complexes as well as smaller friendly ones, shops of all kinds, and many night-clubs. The ideal conditions of the region, important international windsurfing competitions often take place here.
  • Ixia - West coast resorts, close to Paradisi and Tholos, nearby to the airport and Rhodes city.
  • Kalithea - snorkeling and resort hotels.
  • Laerma - inland village near some monuments, contains a few restaurants, inland from Lindos via Lardos. This village has been continuously inhabited since the Pre-Hellenic period. the Monastery Taxiarchis Michail is 4km southwest of Laerma and is the largest monastery on Rhodes
  • Lardos - the market square of that town has restaurants and shops, nearby to Lindos.
  • Lindos - Picturesque village, site of important ancient acropolis.
  • Pefkos - A smaller tourist resourt close to Lindos. Originally started as a small collection of farms and private residences, but has grown into a town in its own right.
  • Rhodes city - The biggest city on the island and seat of the local government
  • Theologos or (Tholos)- A traditional village
To See & Do (besides the beaches)

Filerimos chapelAsklipio Inland from Kiotari.
In the little church there are fascinating displays, honoring the continuity of the cult of healing from ancient times to a modern midwife and nurse. In Greek mythology, Asklepios was the son of the god Apollo who created the art of medicine.

Cape Prasonisi.
The southern-most tip of Rhodes. There is a peninsular connected to the main island by a sand bar. Unless you have a 4x4, think twice before driving your car across the sand bar. It becomes progressively less solid and it is easy to get stuck there in the sand.

Epta Piges. (Seven springs) and that is literally all there is to see there except for a short forest walking trail. In the hot summer months, the cool shade provides a pleasant respite from the sun.

Filerimos Hill.
Medieval remains, a monastery and chapel. Good views over the north of the island.

Valley of the Butterflies.
Since the butterflies - which are actually coloured moths - in this area need quietude for their procreation and since the area is visited by many tourists, the population of the Petaloudes "butterflies" is constantly on the decline; even to a degree that it does not make any sense anymore to go there, as you will hardly see any of the moths. It is still a beautiful area regardless.
